How long does an insurance company have to respond to my claim?

Most states have regulations governing insurance company response times. Typically, an insurer must acknowledge receipt of your claim within 10–15 business days and must accept or deny the claim within 30–45 days after receiving proof of loss. However, these timelines vary by state and by the complexity of the claim. Insurers can legitimately request extensions when they need additional information or when investigations are genuinely ongoing. If an insurance company unreasonably delays, denies a valid claim, or fails to investigate in good faith, they may be liable for bad faith insurance practices — which can result in damages beyond the policy limits. Keep detailed records of all communications and note when you submitted documentation. If you believe an insurer is acting in bad faith or unreasonably delaying your claim, consult a personal injury attorney immediately.
