Can I represent myself in a personal injury case?
You have the legal right to represent yourself (called proceeding "pro se") in a personal injury case, but doing so carries significant risks. Insurance companies are represented by trained professionals who handle claims daily and know every tactic to minimize payouts. Without legal knowledge, you may unknowingly accept a settlement far below your case's true value, miss important filing deadlines, fail to properly gather and preserve evidence, or inadvertently say something that damages your claim. Self-representation may be reasonable for minor accidents with small, clear-cut damages where liability is undisputed and medical treatment was minimal. However, for cases involving serious injuries, significant medical bills, lost wages, disputed liability, multiple parties, or a coverage dispute, hiring an experienced attorney almost always results in a better financial outcome even after fees are paid.
